Surface disinfection

The simplest and often the most necessary method: we treat exactly the surfaces people touch.

How it is done

Surface disinfection is a two-stage process, and both stages are compulsory. Skip one and the other does not work — that is not a formality, it is how the method works.

Step one — mechanical cleaning. We remove dirt, grease and dust so the product can physically make contact with the surface itself.

Step two — treatment with contact time. We apply the product and leave it on the surface for as long as it needs, and only then wipe it off if required.

Unlike fogging and ozone, this method is selective: we treat exactly the surfaces that matter rather than the whole room uniformly. In practice most of the attention goes to contact surfaces — the places people touch most often.

Why a dirty surface cannot be disinfected

This is the most commonly skipped part and the main reason "disinfection" sometimes produces no result. The mechanism is simple and physical.

That is exactly why in professional practice cleaning and disinfection are two steps, not alternatives. Cleaning removes dirt; disinfection reduces the number of micro-organisms on an already clean surface. Combined "clean and disinfect" products in a single bottle only work if the surface is already reasonably clean.

Contact time — the most important condition

The second most common reason a treatment does not work: the product is wiped off too soon. Disinfection is not an instant reaction — the active substance needs time to break down the cell structures of micro-organisms. This time is stated for each product and varies considerably between products.

If the surface is wiped straight after application, all that has happened is the mechanical removal of dirt with a damp cloth. The active substance has been bought, applied and wiped away without having time to do what it was paid for.

  • Clean first, then disinfect.
  • Apply so that the surface stays evenly damp.
  • Let the product dry or stay on for the stated time.
  • Wipe only the surfaces that need it — food areas.
  • Use different cloths for different zones.

✗ Wrong

  • Spraying onto a dirty surface.
  • Spraying and immediately wiping dry.
  • Spraying onto the cloth rather than the surface — the amount of product becomes unpredictable.
  • Going from the toilet to the kitchen with the same cloth.
  • Mixing different products in one container.

A product sprayed on and wiped straight off is a product thrown away.

When we use it

  • Contact surfaces — door handles, switches, handrails, tables, lift buttons, toilet surfaces.
  • After illness at home or in a workplace.
  • Regular treatment in offices, institutions, nurseries and medical facilities.
  • In spaces that cannot be left empty — unlike fogging and ozone, surface treatment requires only a minimal break in use.
  • As the first step before fogging or ozone treatment.

Materials have to be taken into account here. Untreated timber, natural stone, some varnished and oiled finishes and soft plastics react differently to different products, so before treatment we establish what we are dealing with and, where necessary, choose a different product or a different method.

There is an honest limit too: surface treatment does not reach anything that is not a surface. It does not work in textiles, soft furniture filling, gaps or ventilation ducts — those need ozone treatment or cold fogging.

Which surfaces people actually touch

The value of the method depends on whether the right surfaces are treated. In practice attention usually goes to large, visible planes — tables and floors — even though those are exactly what people touch least.

  • Door handles on both sides, internal and cupboard doors included.
  • Light switches and socket surrounds — almost always missed.
  • Handrails and stair rails along their full length, not just at the top.
  • Lift buttons, entryphone and alarm panels.
  • Tap handles, flush buttons, soap dispensers.
  • The controls of shared equipment — coffee machine, microwave, printer.
  • In nurseries and schools additionally: chair backs, toy shelves, smooth-surfaced plastic toys.

One more thing almost everybody misses: separating the zones. If the same cloth goes from the toilet to the kitchen, the treatment not only fails to work but actively transfers contamination. In practice this is handled with separate cloths and a set order of work — from the cleanest zone to the dirtiest, never the other way round.

One more mistake that does not fit in the table but matters: how often the treatment happens. Surface disinfection acts on what is on the surface at the moment of treatment. As soon as it is touched, it is a contact surface again. So in places with heavy footfall a one-off treatment achieves little — what works there is a regular schedule.
